The Bead and Button Show

The Milwaukee Bead and Button Show, or should I say, the “Bead and Button Extravaganza!!!”

Holy cats, these folks are SERIOUS about their beading! I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many beads in one place...and in fact, I probably haven’t. This show in Milwaukee is the LARGEST BEAD AND BUTTON SHOW IN THE WORLD!

Can you believe it?? Our little city on the map again! :)

It’s always hard for me to believe when Milwaukee (or Wisconsin, for that matter) is known for being the BEST or the BIGGEST of anything. It’s not that I don’t love our city, but it surely doesn’t get the notoriety that I think some of our events warrant. The Bead and Button Show is one of those events that DOES get the notoriety!

The doorway to the exclusive, world-class, Bead and Button Show!

If you’re into beading at all, if you think you’d like to get into jewelry making, or if you just like to buy jewelry, this is the place to be.

This event is usually held on the same weekend as some other late spring festivals such as Milwaukee Pridefest and Locust Street Festival, and in 2010 it fell on the same weekend as the Milwaukee Air Show.

You shouldn’t have any trouble fitting in some time to stop by, as the show is open to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the final weekend.

There are also numerous classes held the week prior that range from metal work, glass work, bead stringing, wire work and a whole host of other techniques/mediums – that cater to the beginner level all the way up to the advanced student. If you ever wanted to try your hand at some jewelry making, this is the week to do it. The instruction is superb, and you will have immediate access to many of the tools and accessories you’ll need to continue your work at home.

I haven’t taken any classes at the show myself, but I do plan to do that in the next couple of years. I’ve dabbled in beading, but as one of my friends once said to me, “I don’t know that I have time for another hobby.” So true...so sad, but so true. If I could just play all day long, I’m sure I could squeeze it in! :)

The Milwaukee Bead and Button Show is held at the Midwest Airlines Center, which is right in the heart of Downtown Milwaukee.

If you’ve managed to find this site before you found the official show website (which would be hard to believe considering how “on the ball” they are with their website) here is the official Milwaukee Bead Show Website (opens new window). Immediately after this year’s show, they changed the site to include the already scheduled dates for next year. These folks are Organized with a capitol “O”!

If you’re not yet familiar with beading or jewelry making and you’d like to get your feet wet before the show, check out these Milwaukee bead stores for supplies and classes (the following links open new windows):

  1. Knot Just Beads - I haven’t been myself, but a friend of mine reports that the classes here are very helpful – regularly scheduled, and lots to choose from
  2. Planet Bead - the site address is actually planetbead.com, however I’ve noticed problems with the site, so I’m forwarding you to a page that includes a few reviews and the address – classes are offered, but they’re scheduled as needed – great selection of beads!
  3. Michaels - good selection of low-priced beads (for beginners, this is a good idea) along with several “how to” books to get started on your own

Don’t miss the Bead and Button Show next year! If you’re coming from out of town, you may want to consider one of our Downtown Milwaukee Hotels. You’ll be within walking distance of the Midwst Airlines Center (the locale of the show) and in the heart of downtown Milwaukee.

Enjoy your visit!
