Cedar Creek Winery

The Cedar Creek Winery tour is actually the very first winery tour I’ve been on! Even though I’ve been to Door County, I didn’t seem to make it on time for any of the tours...of course, I didn’t seem to have a problem making it to the wine tasting. Yum! And of course on this tour, I got to sample plenty of wine as well.

Similar to the brewery tours in the city, like the Miller Brewery Tour and the Lakefront Brewery Tour, this tour does a fine job of selling you on the wines through multiple samplings!

The Cedar Creek Winery is located in Cedarburg and costs $3 for an individual ticket. The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and includes a tour of the stone wine cellars along with lots of information about how the wine is made, stored and bottled.

It was really quite the informative tour!

Our tour guide, Rachel, said that because there is no vineyard to tour (the sister winery in Prairie du Sac has the vineyard) the guides have to dazzle you with their knowledge instead. Rachel did just that! :)

The best part of the tour was the humongous old wine barrels that were made to store the wine years ago before the invention and use of the much smaller, much more manageable wine barrels. (oh...who am I kidding...the wine tasting was the best part of the tour! But the barrels were cool.)

The huge barrels have this tiny little slit at the bottom that folks would use to slide into the barrel to clean out as necessary.

Now, at the beginning of the tour, NO ONE was interested in climbing into that barrel – except one brave child. After the wine sampling however, the thought of entering the barrel became a bit more palatable...Imagine that! :)

This guy almost made it in but got nervous when everyone started watching him!

So which wine did I buy? I opted for the Riesling – a semi-sweet white wine. The “Syrah” is one of their most popular selling red wines, and while it was certainly delicious, it was a bit on the dry side for me.

Oh! And if you go on a tour, make sure to stop in the gift shop down the hall...the one that sells popcorn! They had the most delicious black-kerneled popcorn I’ve ever had! Definitely have to go back and get some more of that.

Also, if you’re planning to make the trip to Cedarburg for the Cedar Creek Winery tour, take some extra time to wander around the quaint shops of the city, and grab something to eat at one of the many local eateries.

Cedarburg is a delightful small town and well worth the visit! They host several festivals each year - I happened to be there during Winter Festival (opens new window) – but there are others like the Strawberry Festival in the summer, and many miscellaneous art events throughout the year.

What did I do after the tour? I went to the Chophouse at the Milwaukee Hilton thanks to a GROUPON I purchased last year...and oh was it worth it!!
