Milwaukee German Fest

Milwaukee German Fest ist sehr gut!!! Potatoes, potatoes, sauerkraut, beer, and more potatoes...oh, and don’t forget the strudel. (Did I mention potatoes?)

Germans like to eat and drink and eat some more! Hey, I’m not stereo typing...well, perhaps I am, but I’m ¾ German so I think I know what I’m talking about. Here’s a quote from the official German Fest website (opens new window):

”Obviously, a lot of people think that eating at German Fest can be tons of fun – literally. Take the potato pancakes for example, German Fest attendees consume five tons of the delectable delights. But that’s not all, they also devour four tons of onions, five tons of potato salad and five tons of sauerkraut.”

Wow, that’s a lot of food!

My parents are huge fans of Milwaukee German Fest – they love the food, they love the music and they love the 'energy' at the festival. People are very friendly, and everyone seems to have a great time!

Well, perhaps I should classify 'friendly' a bit...you see, the Germans are a serious people, who are serious about doing things right!

I purchased my tickets to Milwaukee German Fest through Groupon!

I purchased my tickets this year through Groupon!!! and it was an outrageous deal! For $20 I got 2 adult tickets and $15 worth of food and drinks at the festival! Now c’mon...you know that’s a deal! The price of a regular admission is $10!

Sidenote: If you haven’t signed up for Groupon yet, it is a MUST! I promote Groupon quite a bit on this site because of the awesome deals that are offered.

Anywho...getting back to the Germans. Now I KNOW that mine was not the first Groupon that they saw! But suffice it to say, we were not getting into that festival, or getting our food and drinks, without thorough verification of this Groupon document. :)

Fortunately, the Groupon was verified, and we went on our merry way!

Nothing says 'Milwaukee German Fest' quite like the old world clothing of my ancestors!

German Fest seems to do a particularly wonderful job of being accommodating to everyone, and giving everyone an opportunity to enter the fair grounds.

Check out the admission deals (opens new window) listed on the website...to name a few, the first day of the festival everyone is able to enter for FREE and receive a coupon good for a 2 for 1 entry on any of the other days while supplies last. There is also free admission on one of the days for anyone who is handicapped, along with that person’s escort, free admission on Sunday if you attend the Protestant church service that morning, and a day coordinating with Hunger Task Force for free entry with a non-perishable food donation.

In these trying economic times, I give Milwaukee German Fest a big thumbs up for this! Everyone should be able to go and have a good time regardless of their financial situation. :)

German Fest has lots to offer that is unique to the German culture. There’s the dachshund race on Sunday (dogs have to be pre-registered), church services, German musicians and performers, polka music of course (my Gramma raised me on that!), and a yoddling contest! Check out these excited yoddlers battling for first place!

Anyone, and I do mean ANYONE - with or without talent, can join the yoddling contest at Milwaukee German Fest!

They were pretty darn impressive overall, but I totally could have taken them! Ok...maybe not...but I sure would've had fun trying! :)

Something else unique to Milwaukee German Fest is the Sheepshead Game!! That’s right, for a small entry fee, you can play Sheepshead in one of the tents! How many festivals offer you that, right?

Tried to learn that game once to no avail...too confusing for me!

Good food, good beer, and 'seriously' friendly people await you at this fest! Truly a wonderful way to embrace the German heritage in general, and YOUR heritage if you happen to be German.

Hope to see you at the fest. Auf wiedersehen!
